2009 PAC SOCCER TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS (10/29/09)

MEN - CURRENT STANDINGS
Thomas More 5-0   15-2
Westminster 4-1   9-9
Washington & Jefferson 3-2   10-6-1
Grove City 3-2   8-8-1
Waynesburg 2-3   3-15

Remaining schedule (applicable contests) - Saturday, Oct. 31:
Grove City at Westminster* - 1 p.m.
Wash. & Jeff. at Bethany* - 1 p.m.
Waynesburg at Thomas More* - 2:30 p.m.

1. Thomas More (5-0) - has clinched the top seed and home field advantage for the PAC Tournament (even if TMC loses to WAY and WES defeats GRO, leaving both at 5-1, TMC is still #1 via head-to-head tiebreaker)

Westminster (4-1) - can clinch #2 seed with a win or tie against GRO Saturday.

W&J (3-2) and Grove City (3-2) have clinched berths in the PAC Tournament. Even if Waynesburg defeats TMC and either (or both) W&J and Grove City lose to drop to 3-3, both teams win head-to-head tiebreakers with WAY.

The scenarios for the #2-4 seeds include:

*If GRO defeats WES and W&J loses to BET:
2. Grove City (4-2) - via head-to-head tiebreaker with WES
3. Westminster (4-2)
4. W&J (3-3) - via head-to-head tiebreaker with WAY

*If GRO defeats WES and W&J defeats BET - we have a three-way tie between GRO, W&J and WES at 4-2, Head-to-head tiebreaker is 1-1 for all teams, so we go to the third tiebreaker - goal differential in conference matches (4-goal maximum per game). Through five conference games, the current goal differential is:

Westminster - +12
Grove City - +4
W&J - Even

Therefore, if this scenario takes place, Westminster will be the #2 seed, while #3 will be Grove City and #4 will be W&J. This is because, since both Grove City and W&J have won their 10/31 games for this scenario to be possible, the most differential that W&J could make up is three goals (e.g. W&J wins 4-0, GRO wins 1-0 - GRO finishes at +5, W&J at +4)

*Obviously, ties on Saturday would result in a number of possible permutations, but these would all determine tournament order without needing any tiebreakers.

WOMEN - CURRENT STANDINGS
Grove City 6-0   9-5-3
Thomas More 5-1   14-2-1
Westminster 4-2   13-5-1
Washington & Jefferson 4-2   9-6-2
Bethany 3-3   9-7-2

Remaining schedule (applicable contests) - Saturday, Oct. 31:

Waynesburg at Thomas More* - noon
Grove City at Westminster* - 3 p.m.
Wash. & Jeff. at Bethany* - 3 p.m.

1. Grove City (6-0) - has clinched the top seed and home field advantage for the PAC Tournament (even if GRO  loses to WES and TMC defeats WAY, leaving both at 6-1, GRO  is still #1 via head-to-head tiebreaker)

2. Thomas More (5-1) - has clinched the second seed and home field for the PAC Tournament semifinals (even if TMC loses to WAY and either/both Westminster and/or W&J win, leaving a tie at 5-2, TMC  is still #2 via head-to-head tiebreaker against both teams)

The scenarios for the #3-4 seeds include:

*Westminster and W&J can each clinch tournament spots with wins on Saturday. If both win, W&J is the #3 seed and WES is #4 due to head-to-head tiebreaker.

*If:
WES defeats GRO, BET defeats W&J: #3. WES (5-2); #4 BET (4-3) - due to head-to-head tiebreaker over W&J
GRO defeats WES, W&J defeats BET: #3. W&J (5-2); #4 WES (4-3) - due to head-to-head tiebreaker over BET
GRO defeats WES, BET defeats W&J - all three teams (BET, W&J, WES) are tied at 4-3. Head-to-head tiebreaker is 1-1 for all teams, so we go to the third tiebreaker - goal differential in conference matches (4-goal maximum per game). Through six conference games, the current goal differential is:

W&J - +8
WES - +6
BET - +3

Thus, the final scores of Saturday's games could still impact which two teams get the final two tournament berths in this scenario. The next three-way tiebreaker, if necessary, is goals for in conference matches (max. 4 per match). However, if the differential tiebreaker ends up eliminating one of the teams and two teams are still tied, we would go back at that point to the head-to-head tiebreaker to determine the final tournament slot and/or seeding.

*Obviously, ties on Saturday would result in a number of possible permutations, but these would all determine tournament order without needing any tiebreakers.
