& Jefferson offensive lineman Chris Teter has been selected
to play for an American Football Coaches Association Division III
all-star team that will represent the United States against the
Mexican National Team in the 2006 Aztec Bowl, Dec. 16, in
Aguascalientes, Mexico. The United States defeated Mexico last year,
53-15, to lead the series, 8-1.

WHEELING - In the Classic’s early game, Bethany shot out to a
lead that once jumped as high as 44 and looked back only long enough
to make sure everyone who participated cracked the scoring column in
a fairly easy looking 29-point victory. The Bison led 50-24 at
halftime, where’d they limited a six-man Panthers squad to 33
percent shooting from the field, including an 0-for-9 effort from
beyond the 3-point arc.

WHEELING - The annual Wendy’s
Classic served up a double with everything Tuesday night at West
Liberty State College’s ASRC. And for the second straight season, it
included an upset bid by Bethany. The host Hilltoppers finally
pulled away to a 110-87 victory against the rebuilding Bison in the
nightcap but not without more than a few nervous moments for coach
Jim Crutchfield and his veteran cast.

To understand
just how much the football team at Washington & Jefferson College
achieved this season, you have to go back to Week 1. The Presidents
just took a 32-14 spanking from Salisbury and the mood among the
players was one of shock and disappointment. Another loss and this
would be a season without playoffs. Anyone who watched that loss to
Salisbury could not have felt optimistic about this W&J team putting
together a long winning streak.

run away from the Division III Saints in the second half. Wright,
who finished 7-for-11 from the field with six rebounds, scored 14 of

The Geneva College men’s basketball team rebounded from its
five-point loss to Taylor University Friday with a 124-63 win over

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Desiree
Sterling, a Newton Falls High graduate, scored a career-high 32
points as the senior standout led the Westminster College women's
basketball team to a 58-53 win over the College of Wooster Saturday.
The Titans (2-2) trailed 49-46 with four minutes remaining, but
Nicole Fee's 17-foot jumper with 1:26 to go gave Westminster a 54-51
lead. Talley Felger (Springfield) scored with 24 seconds remaining
to make it 57-53.

Surpasses 1,000 Career Points

McDermott surpassed 1,000 points for his career in Geneva College's
52-47 loss to Taylor (Ind.) Friday night. McDermott led the Golden

career — while Jermaine Ferguson added 13.

Right Time to Change Clock Rules

opponent of the new NCAA timing rules than Mike Sirianni. No
football team has benefited more than Washington & Jefferson.
Sirianni, the Presidents' head coach, despises the change that,

NEW CASTLE - Westminster’s Rachael Cooper posted nine digs,
seven kills and four assists in a 30-21, 27-30, 30-24, 32-30 loss to
Penn State-Behrend in the semifinals of the ECAC Southern Tournament
last Saturday. In a 30-15, 30-22, 30-21 win over Rutgers-Newark in
the opening round, Cooper notched 12 assists, eight kills and five

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Ryan Mendel ran
for 120 yards and two touchdowns, as Washington & Jefferson held off
a strong second half comeback by Christopher Newport to win 27-23 in
a Division III first-round game Saturday. Ryan Mullen returned an
interception 41 yards for a touchdown just before halftime. Mendel's
10-yard run in the third quarter put Washington & Jefferson (10-1)
ahead, 27-0, and appeared to put the game out of reach.

W&J Women Kick Off Season with a
Victory
They might be
young, but at least for one night, they didn't play like it. The
Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team graduated four
starters, including All-America guard Leigh Sulkowski, from a team
that went 22-5 and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs last
season. Kaleigh Bangor is the lone returning starter and the
Presidents have just two other players who have seen significant
action.

Swallow Excels for W&J
Although only a sophomore,
Bobby Swallow of Salem is enjoying a banner season as a quarterback
for the Washington & Jefferson College football team that has lifted
him into the national spotlight. Swallow, a graduate of West Branch
High, ranks No. 1 in the nation in NCAA Division III in passing
efficiency with 185.74, ahead of Mike Jorris of Mount Union with
178.1.

College women's basketball coach Brian Neal seemingly has it all
this season in his third year at the helm. Neal returns three

Battles Confident Foes in Washington & Jefferson
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) has played
Christopher Newport twice in past Division III playoffs, but never
in Virginia. That changes Saturday when the Presidents (9-1) visit
Pomoco Stadium for a noon first-round playoff game. CNU (8-2) is 0-2
against the Presidents as they meet for the third time in five

Swimming Results
WASHINGTON - Westminster opened
competition in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) as the
Titan men defeated Washington & Jefferson 132-94, while the Titan
women were handed a 125-100 loss by the Presidents. Ryan Trunk swam
a leg of the winning 400 medley relay team that posted a time of
3:37.61. Trunk also took the 200 freestyle (1:47.04) and the 100
freestyle (47.89). Pat Smith and Conor Simpson, also on the 400
medley, took top times in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.50) and the
200 butterfly (2:03.96), respectively.

has been named the Presidents' Athletic Conference soccer player of
the year. Bugel, a graduate of Mars Area High School led the PAC in

Favorites
WASHINGTON -
The development of Shawn Coleman, Marc Lodovico, Jeff Nero and Beau
Wilson in the Waynesburg College men's basketball program has been
steady and intriguing. The four players have gone from inexperienced
freshmen to struggling sophomores to improving juniors. This year,
the four, and their Yellow Jackets teammates, are no longer just
looking to gain experience, or only trying to become competitive or
just hoping for a winning record. They have become contenders and
favorites. They are expected to win.

Presidents' Foe No Longer Limping
Along
WASHINGTON -
At one point, it was little more than a commuter school, the choice
at the bottom of the list for perspective students. It was founded
in 1960 only as a branch campus to prestigious William & Mary. Now,
it is a thriving university with 7,000 applications for 1,000
openings each year and has an enrollment twice the size of Mt.
Union. New dormitories and facilities have made Christopher Newport
a preferred place for students and the athletic programs aren't bad,
either.

Skipping the Sidelines
The Presidents wrapped up their 21st
PAC football championship with the win. Nineteen of the 21 titles
have come in the past 21 years. The win by W&J was also the 24th
straight over the Bison. Ryan Mendel led the way for the Prexies,
going over the century mark in rushing for the seventh straight game
with his total of 160 yards. He also scored four touchdowns along
the way. With his effort, Mendel upped his season mark-to-date to
1,269 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Presidents, who totaled 504 yards
including a season best 328 yards rushing, didn't throw a single
pass in the second half.

College Basketball: Blundo Leaves
New Castle to Coach at Westminster
NEW CASTLE - The Westminster College men’s basketball team
received a great addition to its bench in the offseason. After seven
years as the top assistant coach at New Castle High, Ralph Blundo is
now an assistant coach for the Titans. Blundo left the Red Hurricane
in late August. However, he’s still a history teacher at the high
school.

Hempfield Grad Swims to a Sweep
PITTSBURGH - After sweeping all six of his events last week,
Washington & Jefferson sophomore swimmer Zach Nigrelli (Hempfield)
was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Swimmer/Diver of the Week.
He won the 100 and 200 freestyles and was a part of the winning
400-medley team relay last week. His top time in the 100 freestyle
was 49.87, while posting a week-best 1:51.87 in the 200, as the
Presidents remain undefeated at 4-0 to start the season.

The last tackle Mark Carlisle made
was the biggest of his Thomas More football career. On Mount St.
Joseph's final drive of Bridge Bowl XI, the linebacker dragged down

PITTSBURGH - Beaver Area High
School graduate Kim Walsh has been named Presidents' Athletic
Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week. Walsh, a 5-6
junior setter at Grove City College, averaged 13.3 assists per game
for the 2-1 Wolverines last week, posting 50-plus assist efforts in
all three matches.

Jefferson's Bobby Regan, another Pine-Richland alumnus, earned
first-team Presidents' Athletic Conference honors by placing fourth
in the PAC cross country championships. Regan posted a time of 28:37
in the 8-kilometer race.

Saint Drop to 5-3 with Loss
EDGEWOOD - It looked like the
Thomas More College football team would be rolling to an easy win,
compiling a 14-0 lead in the second quarter against the worst
defense in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. But the Saints
scored just three points the rest of the way and fell to the Bison
21-17 Saturday afternoon at Dixie Heights.

week as the nation's 25th-ranked squad.

BETHANY - The Bethany College men’s soccer team earned its
eighth straight shutout and pushed its record to 14-2-3 by defeating
Washington & Jefferson 1-0 in overtime Tuesday, in a Presidents’
Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal. Junior Teli Mantziouras’
first career goal marked the first time the Bison beat the
Presidents in the last five meetings.
