FIVE FROM PAC NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT (5/18/12)
Five PAC student-athletes (three men, two women) have been selected
to the 2011-12
Capital One Academic All-District IV Division III At-Large teams,
released today by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
On the men's side, Grove City junior tennis standout
Caleb Fuller
(3.93 GPA, economics) and junior swimmer
Eric Fairchild
(3.73 GPA, mathematics) were both honored along with W&J sophomore
wrestler
Josh Etzel
(3.62 GPA, chemistry). GCC posted both PAC reps
on the women's squad: senior tennis player
Megan Bennett
(3.98 GPA, finance) and junior swimmer
Angela Palumbo
(3.71 GPA, mathematics). All five All-District awardees now move to
the Academic All-America ballot.
NWCA ANNOUNCES
SCHOLAR
ALL-AMERICANS (3/13/12)
Eight PAC wrestlers have been named
2011-12 Division III Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling
Coaches Association (NWCA). All three PAC wrestling teams had
individual honorees and also each the
NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award. Thiel's
Corey Brown
and Matt Lowry earned Scholar All-American honors and the
Tomcats ranked seventh as a team with a 3.417 grade point average
(GPA).
Waynesburg's honorees included
Alex Crown, Garrett Johnston, Cody Catalina and
Anthony Bonaventure, while the Yellow Jackets as a team
were ranked 15th with a 3.32 team GPA.
Taylor Potts and Josh Etzel
earned the honor for Washington & Jefferson and the Presidents
earned the team award with a 3.279 GPA, ranked 20th.

WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP (3/10/12)

each concluded their seasons this weekend at the
2012 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships,
March 9-10 in LaCrosse, Wisc. Brown went 3-3 overall to finish in
eighth place nationally at 133 pounds and become the first four0time
All-America in Tomcat wrestling histotry.
Etzel, who was the first President to compete at the national
championship tournament in nine years, went 0-2 at 141 pounds and
finished his season with a 24-5 record. He
will take a 31-6 career record into his junior year next winter.

PAC PAIR SET FOR 2012 NCAA D-III
CHAMPIONSHIP (3/6/12)
A pair of PAC and Midwest Regional wrestling champions are set to
compete for national titles this weekend at the
2012 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, scheduled for
March 9-10 in LaCrosse, Wisc. Thiel senior 133-pounder
Corey Brown, a three-time All-American for the Tomcats, is
seeded second and will face Chad Henle of St. John's (Minn.)
in the opening round. Washington & Jefferson sophomore 141-pounder
Josh Etzel is unseeded and will battle the #2 seed, Kodie
Silvestri of Wartburg, in the first round. Etzel is the first
W&J wrestler to compete at the NCAA national meet since 2003.

WAYNESBURG PLACES SECOND AT NCAA D-III REGIONALS;
TC'S BROWN, W&J'S ETZEL WIN WEIGHT TITLES (2/25/12)
Several
PAC
wrestlers posted strong performances at the
2012 NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals at Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland today.
Corey Brown of Thiel (133) and
Josh Etzel of W&J (141) each captured weight class titles and
advanced to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships
in LaCrosse, Wisc., on March 8-10. Waynesburg was second in team
standings with 83 pts, followed by 2012 PAC champion Thiel
(5th-70.5) and W&J (8th-36.5).

THIEL CAPTURES 2012 PAC CHAMPIONSHIP (2/10/12)
The Thiel Tomcats ended Waynesburg’s two-year run as conference
wrestling champions, as a win at 197-pounds by Patrick
Morris provided the decisive points at the
2012 PAC Wrestling Championship, hosted
by Washington & Jefferson College at the Henry Memorial Center in
Washington, Pa. The Matcats finished with 110 points to edge
Waynesburg (107) and host W&J (66). With the win, Thiel (which had
won 10 straight league crowns before the Yellow Jackets captured the
crown in 2010 and 11) has now won 11 of the past 13 PAC team titles.
The Tomcats and Waynesburg each won four weight classes, with host
W&J picking up a pair of weight class titles. Veteran Thiel mentor
Craig Thurber
was voted 2012 PAC Coach of the Year following the championship,
while Washington & Jefferson senior heavyweight
Taylor Potts
was voted 2012 PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler.
W&J TO HOST 2012 PAC CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY

The Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pa. will
serve as the site of the 2012 PAC
Wrestling Championships, hosted by Washington & Jefferson
College this Friday, Feb. 10, beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is $5
for adults and $2 for non-W&J students, while Washington & Jefferson
students are admitted free with a valid college ID. Two-time
defending PAC champion
Waynesburg University will look to defend its conference crown, but
will face stiff competition from 2011 runner-up Thiel College and
the host Presidents. In addition to the conference championship

TC'S BROWN NAMED PAC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

The PAC has announced that senior
All-American wrestler Corey Brown of Thiel College has been
named Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December
2011.
2011-12 WRESTLING PREVIEW RELEASED (10/28/11)
The Waynesburg wrestling team will work for the three-peat in
2011-12 under the guidance of two-time reigning PAC Coach of the
Year Ron Headlee and with seven starters returning to lead
this year's squad. Thiel enters the 2011-2012 wrestling season under
ninth-year head coach Craig Thurber who brings back 19
upperclassmen, including a seasoned group of eight seniors to help
lead the way. The Washington & Jefferson wrestling team looks to
return to the top of the PAC standings as it enters the 2011-12
season with a new leader at the helm of the program, Tommy
Prairie. Prairie will look to improve on the team's 6-3-1 dual
meet record and third-place showing at the PAC Championships last
season.

PRAIRIE NAMED HEAD COACH AT W&J (4/15/11)
Washington &
Jefferson College
has hired Tommy Prairie as its new head wrestling coach.
Prairie who replaces Jay Robison,
comes to W&J after spending four seasons as the head wrestling coach
at Plymouth State University (N.H.). This past winter, he helped
the Panthers to their best finish (4th) at the New England Wrestling
Association (NEWA) Championships since 2003.
Prairie is a 2005 graduate of Williams
College (Mass.).
CROWN, BROWN EARN D-III ALL-AMERICA HONORS (3/12/11)
A pair of PAC wrestlers earned All-America honors this
weekend at the 2011 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in
Lacrosse, Wisc. Leading the way was sophomore Waynesburg
125-pounder Alex Crown,
who recovered from an opening round loss to finish in fourth
place and earn All-America status.
It is the highest finish by a PAC wrestler since Thiel's Chad
Beach also placed fourth in 1993. Joining Crown as an
All-American was Thiel senior 133-pounder Corey Brown,
who became the first three-time All-American in school history
with his second straight eighth-place finish after placing sixth
as a freshman.
Rounding out the PAC contingent were two WU grapplers:
141-pounder Nick Garber was 2-2, while 285-pounder
Brandon Fedorka was 0-2.
BRACKETS ANNOUNCED FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP (3/8/11)
The
weight class brackets for the
2011
NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship in Lacrosse, Wisc.,
this Friday and Saturday (March 11-12) has been released. The
PAC will have four conference qualifiers (Alex Crown
(WAY)-125, Corey Brown (THI)-133, Nick Garber
(WAY)-141, Brandon Fedorka (WAY)-285) attempting to
capture a Division III national title this weekend.
ROBISON RESIGNS AS HEAD COACH AT W&J (3/8/11)
Washington & Jefferson College head
wrestling coach Jay Robison
recently announced his resignation to pursue other
interests. Robison has served as the Presidents’ head coach for
the past six seasons. The 2008 PAC Coach of the Year coached 12
PAC champions.
PAC AWARDS WINTER SPORTSMANSHIP HONORS (3/3/11)The
Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has announced the
2010-11 Winter PAC Team Sportsmanship Award winners. The PAC
Team Sportsmanship Award was started in the 2008-09 sports
season, and is an effort to recognize and encourage positive
sportsmanship among conference teams. The award is sponsored by
the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
FOUR PAC WRESTLERS EARNED REGIONAL TITLES (2/26/11)
Four PAC wrestlers captured weight
class titles today at the
NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships at Wabash.
With the wins,
the Waynesburg trio of Alex Crown (125), Nick Garber
(141) and Brandon Fedorka (285) along with
Thiel's Corey Brown (133) advance to the NCAA D-III
National Championships. In team competition, PAC champion
Waynesburg (112.5) finished third in a nine team field, followed
by W&J (sixth, 88 points) and Thiel (seventh, 67.5).

WU CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT PAC TITLE
(2/11/11)
The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets captured their second
consecutive conference wrestling title at the
2011 PAC Championship, hosted by the
Yellow Jackets at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in Waynesburg. The
Yellow Jackets captured six of the 10 weight class championship
en route to the victory, led by junior 174-pounder Jared
Roberts, who was named PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler
following the meet. Third-year Yellow Jacket mentor Ron
Headlee garnered PAC Coach of the Year laurels for the
second consecutive year.
WAYNESBURG TO HOST 2011 PAC CHAMPIONSHIP (2/11/11)
The 2011 Presidents’
Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestling Championships will
take place at the Rudy Marisa Gymnasium on the campus of
Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pa., this Friday,
February 11, 2011, beginning at 5 p.m. The Waynesburg
Yellow Jackets will be looking to defend their PAC wrestling
title after edging perennial PAC power Thiel in the 2010 PAC
Championships last year in Greenville. All the links, including

PAC WRESTLERS NAMED IN 2010-11 RANKINGS (9/21/2010)
The
first preseason d3wrestle.com rankings were recently
released and nine PAC wrestlers were listed amongst the nation's
best. Waynesburg's Nick Garber and Thiel's Corey Brown
are ranked third and fourth at 133 pounds. Waynesburg's Alex
Crown is ranked as a contender at 125 pounds. W&J's Zach
Cecchetti, Dominick Demor, Stefen Firmstone,
and Robbie Mies along with Waynesburg's Jesse Byerly
and Thiel's Patrick Morris are all ranked as honorable
mentions.
PAC TRIO EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS FROM NWCA (3/12/10)
PAC wrestling standouts
Corbin Semple of Waynesburg,
Brandon Sansom of Washington & Jefferson and
Corey Brown of Thiel have each
receive Scholar-Athlete recognition from the
National Wrestling Coaches
Association (NWCA). Semple, who was 27-7 this season, holds
a 3.80 GPA majoring in information technology. Sansom, 18-18 in
the 2009-10 season, possesses a 3.59 GPA with a double major in
environmental science and biology. Brown holds a 3.81 GPA
majoring in criminal justics. The Thiel squad also earned team
honors with a 3.255 team GPA, the 16th-highest in the nation in
NCAA Division III.
GARBER, BROWN FINISH 7-8 AT 133, BOTH D-III ALL-AMERICANS AT
2010 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/6/10)
The
2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships concluded
with a pair of PAC stalwarts earning All-America status at 133
pounds.
Nick Garber of Waynesburg fell 16-2 to William
Livingston of Centenary to open the day, while
Corey Brown of Thiel dropped a 3-2 decision to
Aliamain Sterling of Cortland State. The two PAC rivals then
met in the 7th place match, with Garber recording the final 11
points to record a come-from-behind 13-6 win over Brown. With
the seventh place finish, Garber became the first Yellow Jacket
All-American since Shawn Whyte in 2001. With his
eighth-place finish, Brown is now a two-time All-American
(sixth-place finish in 2009).

BROWN, GARBER EARN ALL-AMERICA STATUS, SEMPLE ELIMINATED ON
DAY 1 OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/5/10)
The first day of the
2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships saw a pair of
PAC wrestlers clinch All-America status while advancing to
Saturday competition, while another was eliminated with a 1-2
record. At 133 pounds, both PAC champion Corey Brown of
Thiel and Midwest Regional champion Nick Garber of
Waynesburg went 2-1 Friday to clinch at least a Top-8 finish
entering Saturday's matches. Brown became a two-time
All-American after rebounding from an 8-4 loss to #4 seed
Sean White of Wartburg to defeat Drew Hinschberger of
Coe 6-2 and #6 seed Munkhbaater Baatar of St. Johns 10-7.
Garber followed a similar track in the other half of the 133-lb.
bracket, losing his opener to #3 Paul Bjorkstrand of
Augsburg 10-6, then posting victories over Paul Marcello
of Johns Hopkins (8-7) and White by a 13-6 score. With the wins,
he becomes the first All-American wrestler at Waynesburg since
2001. Yellow Jacket 184-pounder Corbin Semple posted a
1-2 mark Friday. After a 5-2 loss to Josh Wake of SUNY-Oneonta,
Semple pinned Nic Barclay of Luther in 4:25 before being
eliminated by top seed Tyler Burkle of Coe 9-3 in the
nightcap.

PAC TRIO READY TO ROLL AT D-III CHAMPIONSHIP (3/4/10)
Three PAC wrestling standouts will attempt to bring home a
national title this weekend at the
2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. The
complete brackets are now online. A pair of 133-pounders -
PAC champion Corey Brown of Thiel and Midwest Regional
champion Nick Garber of Waynesburg - open with tough
matches. Garber, who is
unseeded going into the event, must first face third-seeded
Paul Bjorkstrand of Augsburg in the opening round, while
Brown, who is also unseeded, is matched against fourth-seed
Sean White of Wartburg. PAC and Midwest Regional 184-pound
champion Corbin Semple of Waynesburg is seeded seventh
and will open against unseeded Josh Wake of SUNY College
at Oneonta. Waynesburg will be providing
live online updates, as well as regular radio updates on
WCYJ-FM throughout the weekend.
GARBER, SEMPLE PACE PAC AT NCAA REGIONALS (2/20/10)
Waynesburg University wrestling standouts Nick Garber
and Corbin Semple each captured weight class titles to
pace a group of nine PAC wrestlers with top four finishes at the
2010 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship, hosted
by Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa. Garber topped
Thiel's Corey Brown 6-0 in an All-PAC final at 133
pounds, while Semple posted a 10-5 decision over Nicholas
Kraus of Trine in the 184-pound final. In addition to Brown,
Zach Crown of Waynesburg also finished second at 125 pounds.
Third-place finishes went to Zach Cecchetti (125) and
Stefen Firmstone (184) of W&J and Jesse Byerly (141)
of Waynesburg. Posting fourth-place finishes were W&J wrestlers
Dominick Demor (157) and Robbie Mies (197).
In team competition, Waynesburg finished fourth in the
10-team field with 87 points, while W&J was seventh (74.5) and
Thiel was ninth (33).
Complete tournament brackets for all weight classes are now
online. Following the meet, it was announced that Garber, Semple
and Brown have all advanced to the NCAA Division III National
Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa next month.
WAYNESBURG EDGES THIEL FOR 2010 PAC TITLE (2/12/10)
The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets captured their first-ever PAC
wrestling title by edging perennial PAC power Thiel in the
2010
PAC Wrestling Championship, hosted by the Tomcats at the Rissell-Beeghly Gym in Greenville. The championship came down to
the final match at 285 with Waynesburg holding a half-point
lead. Yellow Jacket senior Melvin Warrick then clinched
the victory with a 6-2 win. With the victory, the Yellow
Jackets snapped Thiel’s 10-year hold (2000-09) on the conference
title and earned the first conference crown for Waynesburg in
any sport in five years. Following the meet, Waynesburg swept
both major individual awards, as freshman 125-pounder Alex
Crown was voted PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler, while
second-year Yellow Jacket mentor Ron Headlee garnered PAC
Coach of the Year laurels. |
