Four-time defending conference champion Thomas More College has been picked to capture the 2012 football championship in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), according to the preseason poll released at the 2012 PAC Football Media Day at Saint Vincent College today. Voters in the poll included conference head coaches, sports information directors and members of the media present at the conference media day.

Thomas More College senior defensive back Antonio Booker is one of 117 nominees for the 2012 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. The Good Works Team puts a spotlight on the countless "good works" and remarkable stories of service by student-athletes at all levels of college football competition. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing.

 

PAC MEDIA DAY SET FOR AUGUST 2 IN LATROBE (7/11/12)

The 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Football Media Day will once again be hosted by Saint Vincent College in Latrobe on Thursday, August 2, in conjunction with Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. The annual media day event serves as the kickoff to the football season with each of the conference’s nine football coaches addressing the media and previewing the upcoming season for each of their respective programs. The conference preseason poll will be released that day, while video of the Q&A sessions will be available here following the event.

 

IRWIN EARNS NCAA POSTGRAD SCHOLARSHIP (3/16/12)

Grove City College senior football player Tim Irwin has earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic and athletic performance. Irwin is one of 58 fall sports athletes -- 29 men and 29 women representing all three NCAA divisions -- to earn the $7,500 grant. To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative.

 

MOORE NAMED  ALL-AMERICAN BY WEBSITE (12/19/11)
Waynesburg University senior DT Darryl Moore Jr. has been named to the 2011 NCAA Division III Football All-America Third Team by the D3Football.com website. Moore racked up 60 total tackles, 36 of which were solo stops, nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in 2011. He also broke up a pass, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble on his way to his second-straight All-South Region lauding from the website. Moore also notched his second-straight first-team All-PAC selection in November.

 

PAC ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF CARNEGIE MELLON AND CASE WESTERN RESERVE AS FOOTBALL AFFILIATE MEMBERS STARTING PLAY IN 2014 SEASON (12/13/11)
The Presidents' Athletic Conference has accepted Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland as affiliate members in the sport of football. The Tartan and Spartan football programs will begin play in the PAC starting in the 2014 season. The addition of the CMU and CWRU football programs will raise the number of football programs in the PAC from nine to 11. Beginning in 2014, the PAC will play an unbalanced football schedule with eight conference and two non-conference dates. Both schools will remain full members of the University Athletic Association (UAA) in all other sports. SEVEN FROM PAC TO COMPETE IN MEXICO GAME (12/13/11)
Seven PAC football standouts who just completed their collegiate eligibility this fall have been selected to join the 53-player American roster of NCAA Division III standouts competing in the 3rd Annual Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars). The game, which features the Division III all-stars facing the Mexican national team, will take place this Saturday (Dec. 17) at 1:30 p.m. in the 5,000-seat El Tempo del Dolor (The Temple of Pain) in Puebla, Mexico. Saint Vincent leads the PAC with four participants, as Bearcat QB Aaron Smetanka, LBs Anthony Johnson and Armando Fortunato and OL Taofik Amokomowo will be joined by RB/KR Kendall Owens and P/K Aaron Walter from PAC champion Thomas More as well as DL Jarred Frawley from Grove City on the American roster. PAC PLACES SIX ON ALL-SOUTH REGION TEAMS (12/6/11)

Six PAC football standouts have been honored with selection to the 2011 NCAA Division III All-South Region teams, released by the D3Football.com website. Leading the way for the conference was Waynesburg senior DT Darryl Moore Jr., who was the league's lone first team selection. Second team honorees included W&J sophomore WR Alex Baroffio and Thomas More junior DG Zach Autenrieb, while three others - Thomas More sophomore RB Domonique Hayden and the Waynesburg duo of senior C Nick Hanley and senior DB Sean Hunt - earned third team laurels.

 

THOMAS MORE FALLS IN NCAA D-III PLAYOFF 1ST ROUND; SVC, WAYNESBURG SUFFER ECAC SETBACKS (11/19/11)
The 2011 PAC football season came to an end of November 19, as conference teams dropped three postseason contests. PAC champion Thomas More was edged 24-21 at Franklin in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Playoffs, ending the Saints' season at 9-2 overall. The ECAC Division III Southwest Bowl saw Saint Vincent fall 23-15 at Lebanon Valley in the Bearcats' first postseason game since 1949, while Waynesburg dropped a 48-21 decision at Widener in the ECAC Division III South Atlantic Bowl. The lone PAC football win of the day belonged to Bethany, which improved to 5-5 with a 48-0 blanking of King's in a PAC/MAC Football Challenge contest originally scheduled for September 11, which had been postponed due to severe flooding in the Wilkes-Barre area.

The 2011 All-PAC football teams have been released. Conference Player of the Year honors went to Thomas More sophomore running back Domonique Hayden, while 2011 PAC Coach of the Year laurels went to Saint Vincent head coach Bob Colbert.

 

SVC, WU EARN ECAC DIVISION III BOWL BERTHS (11/14/11)
A pair of PAC football teams have earned berths in ECAC Division III bowl games this Saturday (Nov. 19), with both facing opponents from the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC). Saint Vincent will travel to Lebanon Valley for the 2011 ECAC Division III Southwest Bowl, while Waynesburg heads to Widener for the 2011 ECAC Division III South Atlantic Bowl at 1 p.m.

 

TMC TO FACE FRANKLIN IN NCAA 1ST ROUND (11/13/11)
The 19th-ranked PAC champion Thomas More College football team will make its sixth appearance in the NCAA Division III Football playoffs when travels to Franklin, Indiana to play 16th-ranked Franklin College in a first round game on Saturday (November 19, 2011) at 12 noon at Faught Stadium. Franklin (9-1) is an automatic qualifier into the playoffs after winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC). The winner of the game will face the winner of the first round matchup between top-ranked defending NCAA Division III national champion University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Albion College. WEEK 11: W&J EDGES WAYNESBURG; SVC WINS GREEN GAME; GENEVA TAKES "THE GAME"; GCC EARNS MERCER COUNTY CUP; TMC KEEPS BRIDGE BOWL (11/12/11)
The final week of the 2011 regular season means the return of "PAC Football Rivalry Week", with five games on tap. The "PAC Backyard Brawl" saw W&J race to a 21-0 halftime lead, only to see Waynesburg rally to tie the game 21-21. The Presidents then blocked a Yellow Jacket punt in the closing minutes, setting up a 34-yard field goal as time expired for a 24-21 W&J victory. In the "Green Game", Saint Vincent topped Bethany for the first time in five tries, prevailing at home over the Bison 20-14. "The Game" belongs to Geneva for the second straight year, as the GTs overcame a 10-3 third quarter deficit with 20 unanswered points to win at Westminster 23-10. The "Mercer County Cup" again belongs to Grove City, as the Wolverines used a huge first half to roll to a 35-3 decision at Thiel. Finally, the lone non-conference matchup saw PAC champion Thomas More posted a come-from-behind 33-28 win at Cincinnati city rival Mount Saint Joseph in "Bridge Bowl XVI". TEN FROM PAC NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT (11/10/11)
The PAC has had 10 conference football student-athletes named today to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Division III Football teams, released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Nine of those honorees came in District IV, led by Grove City and Washington & Jefferson with three selections each. GCC representatives included senior LB Tim Irwin (3.63 GPA, molecular biology), sophomore DB Chris Gibbs (3.83, molecular biology) and sophomore P Joe Diani (3.62, mathematics). For W&J, senior TE Brett Axner (3.91, business administration), senior OL Gary Flavion (3.48, history) and senior DL Frank Gigler (3.69, pre-physical therapy) represented the Presidents. Other D-IV honorees included Westminster senior QB Shawn Lehocky (3.86, economics), Waynesburg senior DB Ryan Williams (3.48, wellness), and Thiel junior DL Tim Taylor (3.51, biology). In District II, the lone PAC representative was Thomas More junior TE Sam Brown (3.78, accounting). All 10 PAC players will now advance to the Division III Academic All-America team ballot.

WEEK 10: WAYNESBURG STUNS THOMAS MORE; SAINT VINCENT, BETHANY, W&J ALL POST WINS (11/5/11)
The next-to-last week of the 2011 PAC football regular season on November 5th saw an upset with national repercussions, as Waynesburg (5-3, 5-2 PAC) posted a 26-23 road win over four-time PAC champion and No. 6/8 ranked Thomas More (8-1, 7-1 PAC), handing the Saints their first loss of the season. While TMC had already clinched the PAC football crown with its win over Westminster on Oct. 29, the loss likely eliminates the possibility of the Saints hosting an NCAA D-III playoff first round game on Nov. 19. In other grid action, Saint Vincent (5-4, 4-3 PAC) recorded a 21-9 home decision against Westminster (5-4, 4-3 PAC). Bethany (4-4, 3-4 PAC) used a big second half to outgun Grove City (2-7, 2-5 PAC) 33-14. Finally, Washington & Jefferson (5-4, 4-3 PAC) kept Thiel (0-9, 0-7 PAC) winless by defeating the Tomcats at home, 21-7. Geneva had the weekend off. Week nine of the 2011 PAC football season saw the Thomas More clinch its fourth consecutive PAC football title. The unbeaten Saints (8-0, 7-0 PAC) remained perfect with a 27-10 road victory at second-place Westminster (5-3, 4-2 PAC). The Saints' title was clinched when Waynesburg (4-3, 4-2 PAC), which also entered the day with one league loss, suffered a 17-14 home setback to Saint Vincent (4-4, 3-3 PAC) on a 24-yard field goal by SVC's Morgan Porter as time expired. In other action, Grove City (2-6, 2-4 PAC) posted its second upset win in as many weeks, as the Wolverines overcame a 21-0 deficit with 24 unanswered points to edge Washington & Jefferson (4-4, 3-3 PAC) 24-21. PAC TRIO NAMED TO D3FOOTBALL.COM TEAM (10/25/11)

Kurt Devlin of Grove City, Zach Autenrieb of Thomas More, and Kyle Allen of Westminster were all named to D3Football.com's team of the week. Devlin tied a school record with three interceptions in a 21-16 win against Saint Vincent and also led Grove City with 10 total tackles, seven solo. Autenrieb set a Thomas More single-game record (three) and career record (22) for interceptions in the Saints' win against Bethany. Allen scooped a fumbled Thiel kick return and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown in a 48-21 win.

 

WEEK 8: THOMAS MORE STAYS PERFECT; GCC GETS FIRST VICTORY; W&J, WESTMINSTER RECORD WINS (10/22/11)

Week eight of the PAC football season saw four conference matchups take place, with the standings beginning to crystallize as we head into the final three weeks of the regular season. Thomas More (7-0, 6-0 PAC) remained alone in first place, as the Saints posted a 41-21 home win against Bethany (3-4, 2-4 PAC). The TMC win sets up a huge PAC showdown next weekend at Westminster (5-2, 4-1 PAC), which remained tied for second in league play following a 48-21 decision at Thiel (0-7, 0-5 PAC). Washington & Jefferson (4-3, 3-2 PAC) celebrated Homecoming by overcoming a 7-6 halftime deficit to defeat visiting Geneva (2-6, 2-4 PAC) 24-7. Finally, Grove City (1-6, 1-4 PAC) earned its first victory of the 2011 season by outlasting Saint Vincent (3-4, 2-3 PAC) at home, 21-16. Waynesburg (4-2, 4-1 PAC) had the weekend off. Senior football quarterback Shawn Lehocky of Westminster College has been named PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October 2011. Each month, SAAC members at a PAC school nominate a student-athlete to highlight based on academic and athletic accomplishments. Honorees must be a varsity member in their respective sport(s) and in their junior or senior year. Scholar-Athletes of the Month must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be actively involved on his or her campus community.

 

WEEK 7: THOMAS MORE EDGES SAINT VINCENT TO REMAIN UNBEATEN; WESTMINSTER HANDS WAYNESBURG 1ST PAC LOSS; BETHANY, GENEVA POST HOME VICTORIES (10/15/11)

Week seven of the PAC football season is in the books, with three-time defending PAC champion Thomas More alone at the top of the league standings. The Saints (6-0, 5-0 PAC) remained unbeaten Saturday by edging Saint Vincent (3-3, 2-2 PAC) 20-17 in Latrobe. Waynesburg (4-2, 4-1 PAC) fell out of a first place tie with the Saints after the Yellow Jackets suffered their first PAC loss of the season with a 22-20 setback at Westminster (4-2, 3-1 PAC). In other action, both Bethany and Geneva posted impressive defensive performances in home wins. The Bison (3-3, 2-3 PAC) blanked Thiel (0-6, 0-4 PAC) 20-0, while the Golden Tornadoes (2-5, 2-3 PAC) forced six turnovers in a 23-7 win over Grove City (0-6, 0-4 PAC) under the lights in Beaver Falls. WEEK 6: TMC, WAYNESBURG STAY PERFECT IN PAC PLAY; SAINT VINCENT, WESTMINSTER WIN THRILLERS (10/8/11)

Another thrilling week of PAC football is complete following four Homecoming games on October 8 that averaged over 60 points scored per contest. Defending league champion Thomas More (5-0, 4-0 PAC) had the easiest path, as the Saints broke open a 7-7 tie with 30 unanswered points to post a 37-7 victory over winless Grove City (0-5, 0-3 PAC). Waynesburg (4-1, 4-0 PAC) remained tied with TMC atop the PAC standings, as the Yellow Jackets outgunned Geneva (1-5, 1-3 PAC) at home 47-33 behind six TD passes by senior QB Josh Graham. Saint Vincent (3-2, 2-1 PAC) defeated visiting Washington & Jefferson (3-3, 2-2 PAC) for the first time in school history 35-27, setting off an on-field celebration by the capacity Homecoming crowd. Finally, the lone Homecoming crowd to go home unhappy was at Bethany (2-3, 1-3 PAC), as visiting Westminster (3-2, 2-1 PAC) intercepted a fourth-down Bison pass from the Titan eight-yard line in the final minute to clinch a 30-27 win. Thiel (0-5, 0-3 PAC) had the weekend off.

TMC EARNS HIGHEST RANKING IN TEAM HISTORY (10/4/11)

The Thomas More football team moved up in the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Saints received 805 points and are ranked No. 6 in the nation. The No. 6 ranking is the highest in the football program's 22-year history as the Saints' previous best ranking was No. 8, where they were ranked for the past two weeks. Washington & Jefferson also received votes for the third straight week.

 

WEEK 5: THOMAS MORE, WAYNESBURG REMAIN PERFECT IN LEAGUE PLAY; W&J, GENEVA WIN IN THRILLERS (10/1/11)
The fifth week of the PAC football season is in the books following four games on October 1, with only two conference squads remaining unbeaten in league play. Defending PAC champion Thomas More (4-0, 3-0 PAC) has little trouble in a 50-7 road victory at winless Thiel (0-5, 0-3 PAC), while Waynesburg (3-1, 3-0 PAC) used a stout defensive effort to defeated Bethany (2-2, 1-2 PAC) at home, 23-7. The other two PAC games each came down to the wire, as Geneva (1-4, 1-2 PAC) survived a Saint Vincent TD as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime, prevailing 23-20 over the Bearcats (2-2, 1-1 PAC) in the extra session on a 41-yard field goal by Bryan Visingardi for their first-ever PAC victory. Finally, Washington & Jefferson (3-2, 2-1 PAC) used a pair of late sacks to snuff out a final scoring threat by Westminster (2-2, 1-1 PAC) in a 20-16 road victory. Grove City had the weekend off.  

 

W&J'S FLAVION, WESTMINSTER'S LEHOCKY AMONG 30 D-III SEMIFINALISTS FOR 2011 CAMPBELL TROPHY (9/29/11)

Washington & Jefferson senior offensive lineman Gary Flavion and Westminster senior quarterback Shawn Lehocky are listed among the 30 NCAA Division III candidates for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded by the National Football Foundation (NFF), which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 recipients, and the results will be announced via a national press release on Wednesday, October 26. Each recipient will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will vie as finalists for the 2011 Campbell Trophy.

Four PAC football games took place on September 24, highlighted by the battle of perennial national powers Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson. For the fourth straight year, the Saints came out on top as Thomas More (3-0, 2-0 PAC) recorded a 35-32 victory at W&J (2-2, 1-1 PAC). Waynesburg (2-1, 2-0 PAC) also won its second league matchup, spoiling Grove City's (0-4, 0-2 PAC) Homecoming with a 32-26 road decision. Saint Vincent (2-1, 1-0 PAC) rolled to a 30-0 halftime lead en route to a 36-14 win at Thiel (0-4, 0-2 PAC). Finally, Geneva (0-4, 0-2 PAC) saw its home PAC debut spoiled by a 48-27 loss to Bethany (2-1, 1-1 PAC). Westminster (2-1, 1-0 PAC) had the weekend off.

TMC EARNS HIGHEST RANKING IN TEAM HISTORY (9/19/11)

The Thomas More football team moved up in the internet website D3football.com's Top-25 and earned its highest ranking in 22 years of football. The Saints received 386 points and are ranked No. 8 in the nation. The No. 8 ranking is the highest in the football program's history as the Saints' previous best ranking was No. 9, where they were ranked for six straight weeks to end the 2010 season and to begin the 2011 season.
 

PAC LEAGUE PLAY OPENS ON SEPTEMBER 17 (9/17/11)
Week three of the football season on September 17 marked the beginning of league play with four conference contests, while Saint Vincent had the weekend off. Three-time defending PAC champion Thomas More (2-0, 1-0 PAC) opened defense by rolling past Geneva (0-3, 0-1 PAC) 41-6 in the Golden Tornadoes' first game which counted in the league standings. Waynesburg (1-1, 1-0 PAC) also had little trouble at home this afternoon, posting a 46-7 decision over Thiel (0-3, 0-1 PAC). A pair of PAC openers took place under the lights, with Washington & Jefferson (2-1, 1-0 PAC) winning 31-14 at Bethany (1-1, 0-1 PAC), while Westminster (2-1, 1-0 PAC) outlasted Grove City (0-3, 0-1 PAC) 25-20 on the road.   Complete PAC statistics through week three are now online.

PAC FOOTBALL TEAMS GO 2-5 IN WEEK TWO (9/10/11)
PAC football teams recorded a 2-5 record against non-conference opponents on September 10. Three-time defending PAC champion Thomas More opened its 2011 season on a high note with a 44-13 home win against Hanover. The other victor in week two was Saint Vincent, which led the conference charge in the PAC/MAC Challenge Series by rolling past FDU-Florham 55-3. The game of the day took place in Washington, where Delaware Valley edged Washington & Jefferson 20-19 in a battle of perennial Top 25 programs. Widener erupted for 30 unanswered second half points to break a 14-14 halftime tie and defeat Thiel 44-14. Lebanon Valley avenged a 2010 home loss to Grove City by posting a 27-7 road win over the Wolverines. Lycoming had not trouble at Westminster, winning 41-3, while Geneva fell at Albright 46-10 under the lights. BETHANY-KING'S FOOTBALL GAME POSTPONED (9/9/11)

Due to flooding and a mandatory evacuation in Wilkes-Barre, PA, where King’s College is located, Saturday’s football game between Bethany College and King’s has been postponed. The game could possibly be made up following the teams’ currently scheduled regular season finales. However, the game would only be played on Nov. 19 at Bison Stadium if neither Bethany nor King’s qualified for the postseason.

 

WAYNESBURG-WILKES GAME CANCELLED (9/8/11)

Due to heavy flooding in the Wilkes-Barre area that has resulted in a campus evacuation at Wilkes, the Wilkes-Waynesburg football game scheduled for Saturday at noon has been cancelled . It is yet to be determined whether the game will be rescheduled or not. Any other game adjustments/cancellations for this weekend will be posted here as soon as we receive them.

PAC TEAMS POST 3-5 RECORD IN WEEK ONE (9/3/11)
PAC football teams opened the 2011 season with a 3-5 record against non-conference opponents, with four of the five losses coming by eight points or less. Opening week victories went to Washington & Jefferson, which rolled to a 40-0 shutout win at Juniata; Bethany, which recorded a 28-7 decision at Allegheny; and Westminster, whp prevailed at home under the lights over Hiram 17-7. In other action, Grove City saw a failed two-point attempt in the closing minutes prove costly in a 21-19 loss at Carnegie Mellon. Bridgewater closed the game with 17 unanswered points to edge Saint Vincent 20-17 in overtime. Waynesburg came up short in a defensive struggle at Christopher Newport 12-7. Thiel was stopped at the Marietta three-yard line as time expired in a 32-24 Pioneer victory. Finally, Geneva fell at home to Frostburg State 34-21. NFL REF STERATORE TO LEAD PAC OFFICIALS (8/24/11)
Gene Steratore Jr., a 28-year officiating veteran who currently serves as a referee in the National Football League (NFL), will serve as the PAC Coordinator of Football Officiating in his role as head of the Tri-State officials association, beginning in the 2011 season. He replaces Ed Manning, who retired following the 2010 season after 11 years in the position.

 

2011 PAC FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS: FOOTBALL (8/22/11)
For six weekdays leading up to the September 1 competition start date, the PAC will be releasing 2011 conference previews for all varsity fall sports. We begin with football, where three-time defending PAC champion Thomas More has won 19 consecutive league games and will look for a "four-peat" this fall. However, the Saints will again face stiff competition from several conference foes, including 2010 runners-up Washington & Jefferson and Waynesburg. Geneva, the only PAC team to top Thomas More during the past three seasons, also begins its first season in pursuit of the PAC crown after being approved for NCAA Division III active membership this summer. PAC PRESEASON LAURELS CONTINUE TO ROLL IN (8/7/11)
Several PAC football programs have been lauded with preseason honors as we prepare to enter the start of training camps this week. Three-time defending PAC champion Thomas More (which is ranked by the NCAA as the second all-time winningest team in NCAA Division III history) is ranked 11th in the nation by both D3Football.com and Lindy's and 14th by The Sporting News. Washington & Jefferson is also ranked 16th by The Sporting News and is listed among others receiving votes by D3Football.com. Lindy's also placed the W&J-Thomas More clash on September 24 as one of five games to watch in NCAA Division III this fall, Finally, Waynesburg junior tight end Adam Moses was tabbed as a first team preseason All-American by Lindy's.
 

ROHRER NAMED DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AT W&J (8/7/11)
Washington & Jefferson recently announced Shawn Rohrer as the Presidents’ new defensive coordinator. Rohrer, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Saint Vincent, takes over for Matt Caponi, who was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. A 1998 Slippery Rock University graduate, Rohrer has also spent time as a defensive assistant coach at California (Pa.), Shepherd (W.Va.) and his alma mater.

 

THOMAS MORE TABBED FOR PAC "FOUR-PEAT" (8/3/11)
Three-time defending conference champion Thomas More College has been picked to again capture the 2011 football championship in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), according to the preseason poll released at the 2011 PAC Football Media Day at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe today. Voters in the polls included conference head coaches, sports information directors (SIDs), and members of the media present at the conference media day.

 

PAC DUO TABBED TO AFCA "GOOD WORKS" TEAM (7/20/11)
A pair of PAC football standouts - Tim Taylor of Thiel and Jay Volker of Thomas More - are among a record 132 student-athletes honored with nomination to the 2011 Allstate Good Works Team, released today by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The award recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation and is widely considered the sport’s pre-eminent community service award.

GROVE CITY HIRES GREGG FULL-TIME (5/10/11)

Grove City College has hired Matt Gregg as a full-time faculty member of its Department of Physical Education and Athletics, effective July 1, 2011. Gregg has spent the last three seasons as an assistant football coach at Grove City. Gregg will remain as an offensive line coach while also coordinating the preparation and editing of video for the program.

 

BOWERS, PILATO NAMED TO ALL-DECADE TEAM (1/18/10)
Two former PAC football standouts have been honored by the D3Football.com website with selection to its NCAA Division III Football All-Decade Team, covering the years 2000-09. Grove City RB R.J. Bowers (1997-2000) was a second team honoree, while Washington & Jefferson S Frank Pilato (2001-04) was tabbed to the third team.

 

OWENS NAMED ALL-AMERICAN BY WEBSITE (12/18/10)

Thomas More College senior defensive tackle Tyler Owens has been named a first team All-American by the internet website, D3football.com. Owens, named the 2010 PAC Player of the Year after leading the Saints to their third consecutive PAC football title, previously earned All-America laurels from the AFCA.

 

PAC TRIO PLAYS IN "BOWL OF THE STARS" (12/18/10)
Three PAC football standouts who recently completed their final season of eligibility were among the 44-player roster of Division III players competing today in the "Bowl of the Stars" at the Tec de Monterrey Stadium in Toluca, Mexico. PAC players participating include senior DL and 2010 PAC Player of the Year Tyler Owens and senior FB/TE Matt Clark of Thomas More, as well as OL Pete Polesnak of Grove City. The D-III stars faced the CONADEIP All Stars from Mexico, winning 48-7.

 

PAC DUO NAMED AFCA ALL-AMERICANS  (12/13/10)
A pair of PAC football standouts have been selected to the 25-man AFCA Division III Coaches All-America team, released today by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The 2010 PAC Player of the Year, senior DL Tyler Owens of Thomas More, was one of four defensive linemen selected. He was joined by Washington & Jefferson senior S Craig Sedunov, who was one of four defensive backs lauded. The selection of Sedunov marks the ninth consecutive year W&J has had a player chosen for AFCA All-America honors, the longest current streak in the nation.

 

NINE FROM PAC NAMED ALL-SOUTH REGION (12/9/10)
Nine PAC football standouts have been honored with selection to the 2010 All-South Region Football teams, released today by the D3Football.com website. A pair of conference standouts earned first team recognition: senior DT and 2010 PAC Player of the Year Tyler Owens of Thomas More and Waynesburg sophomore TE Adam Moses. TMC freshman RB Domonique Hayden was the lone second team honoree, while six players were tabbed for third team laurels: Bethany senior G Jason Soltis, junior DE Jay Volker and sophomore CB Zach Autenrieb of Thomas More, senior S Craig Sedunov of Washington & Jefferson, and juniors DT Darryl Moore Jr. and CB Sean Hunt of Waynesburg.

The conference has released the 2010 All-PAC Football teams and postseason award winners. PAC champion Thomas More swept the top two awards, as senior DL Tyler Owens was selected as 2010 PAC Player of the Year, while fourth-year Saint mentor Jim Hilvert garnered PAC Coach of the year laurels for 2010.

 

THOMAS MORE HOSTS W&L IN FIRST ROUND IN NCAA D-III PLAYOFFS; W&J TO HOST F&M IN ECAC BOWL (11/15/10)

PAC football champion Thomas More (10-0) will host ODAC champion Washington & Lee (8-2) in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs on Saturday, November 20 at 12 noon at The Bank of Kentucky Field. It will be the fifth appearance in the national playoffs for the 10th-ranked Saints. Also this Saturday (Nov. 20), PAC runner-up Washington & Jefferson (8-2) will host Franklin & Marshall (6-4) in the ECAC Division III Southwest Bowl at Cameron Stadium beginning at noon.

 

RIVALRY WEEK HAS 4 CLASSICS, 1 BLOWOUT (11/13/10)

The third installment of "PAC Football Rivalry Week" lived up to its name during the final weekend of the regular season on November 13. All four games involving conference rivals went down to the wire, while the PAC remained dominant in the lone non-league matchup. Washington & Jefferson (8-2, 6-1 PAC) posted its seventh straight victory of the season, as the Presidents won the "PAC Backyard Brawl" with a 31-30 overtime decision at Waynesburg (6-4, 4-3 PAC) after a two-point conversion attempt by the Yellow Jackets in OT failed. "The Game" certainly lived up to its historical billing, as Geneva (5-5) outlasted Westminster (2-8) 30-24 in three overtimes. The "Green Game" saw Bethany (5-5, 4-3 PAC) edge Saint Vincent (3-7, 3-4 PAC) 35-28, while Grove City (5-5, 3-4 PAC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead, then held off a late Thiel (0-10, 0-7 PAC) rally with a long TD run in the final minutes to defeat the Tomcats 35-21. In the lone non-league rivalry contest, PAC champion Thomas More (10-0) had little trouble with Cincinnati city rival Mount St. Joseph (5-5) in "Bridge Bowl XV," as the Saints recorded a 33-0 home shutout win. SAINTS EDGE JACKETS TO CLINCH 2010 CROWN; W&J KEEPS ROLLING; GCC, SVC ALSO POST WINS (11/6/10)

The race for the 2010 PAC football title came to an end today in Waynesburg, as unbeaten Thomas More (9-0, 7-0) overcame a 10-7 fourth quarter deficit by scoring the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to play to defeat the host Yellow Jackets (6-3, 4-2 PAC) 14-10. The win clinched the Saints' third consecutive league crown and an automatic bid for the NCAA Division III playoffs, beginning on Nov. 20. In other week 10 league action, Washington & Jefferson (7-2, 5-1 PAC) ran its win streak to six games with a 47-14 decision at Thiel (0-9, 0-7 PAC). Saint Vincent (3-6, 3-3 PAC) won its second game in three weeks, posting a 21-14 victory at Westminster (2-7, 1-6 PAC). Finally, Grove City (4-5, 2-4 PAC) edged Bethany (4-5, 3-3 PAC) at home 21-7. EIGHT FROM PAC NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT (11/4/10)
The PAC has placed eight football standout student-athletes on the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District II College Division Football teams, released today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Washington & Jefferson led all conference schools with four honorees, including the lone first team selection, junior DL Frank Gigler (3.67 cumulative GPA, child development education). The Presidents also boasted three of the seven second team awardees: senior QB Gino Rometo (3.46, business), senior WR Jordan Roycroft (3.59, accounting) and senior DB Michael Trunzo (3.52, business). Other second team selections included the Waynesburg duo of senior DL Anthony Calcagni (3.40, business management) and sophomore DL Matt Krause (3.35, nursing) as well as Thiel senior LB Bobby Shew (3.84, business administration) and Bethany junior OL Cory Potter (3.30, English).

Week nine of the PAC football season on October 30 saw all four teams with better records entering the weekend post victories, setting up key showdowns during the final two weeks of the regular season. Thomas More (8-0, 6-0 PAC) remained unbeaten at home as the Saints posted a 37-13 decision over Westminster (2-6, 1-5 PAC). TMC has now clinched at least a share of the 2010 PAC regular season title and can earn the title outright with a win next week at Waynesburg (6-2, 4-1 PAC), which posted its fourth consecutive win by outlasting Saint Vincent (2-6, 2-3 PAC) 34-28 in Latrobe. Washington & Jefferson (6-2, 4-1 PAC) ran its win streak to five games, as the Presidents held off a late rally by Grove City (3-5, 1-4 PAC) to defeat the Wolverines 21-14. Finally, Geneva (4-5) snapped a three-game skid as the Golden Tornadoes overcame a 6-0 halftime deficit to win 34-20 at Thiel (0-8, 0-5 PAC). Bethany had the weekend off. Week eight in PAC football ended as it began, with Thomas More alone atop the PAC standings with an unblemished record. The Saints had little trouble on the road at Bethany, as TMC (7-0, 5-0 PAC) snapped the Bison's three-game win streak with a 48-14 victory. Washington & Jefferson (5-2) earned its fourth straight win in dramatic fashion, as the Presidents intercepted a Geneva (3-5) pass in the end zone in the closing seconds to secure a 22-16 road victory. Westminster (2-5, 1-4 PAC) celebrated the first home night game in the program's history by shutting out winless Thiel (0-7, 0-5 PAC) 35-0. The final conference matchup saw Saint Vincent (2-5, 2-2 PAC) snap a three-game losing skid with a 42-17 home decision over Grove City (3-4, 1-3 PAC). Finally, Waynesburg (5-2) stepped out of league play to topple Frostburg State 41-7, running the Yellow Jacket win streak to three games. It was Homecoming week in the PAC on October 9, as all four home teams welcomed their alumni back to campus. However, only one of the four home squads was able to come away with a victory. Nationally-ranked PAC leader Thomas More (5-0, 3-0 PAC) remained unbeaten, as the Saints overcame an early 9-7 deficit with 24 unanswered points to outlast Grove City (2-3, 1-2 PAC) 31-9. Washington & Jefferson (3-2, 3-1 PAC) was the lone home victor, as the Presidents defeated visiting Saint Vincent (1-4, 1-1 PAC) 31-20. WEEK #5: TMC, W&J POST BIG WINS; GENEVA EDGES ST. VINCENT; BETHANY HANDS WU FIRST PAC LOSS (10/2/10)
As we near the halfway point of the 2010 football season, two-time defending champion Thomas More remains in control of its own destiny as the Saints attempt to "three-peat". TMC (4-0, 2-0 PAC) celebrated Homecoming by handling winless Thiel (0-5, 0-3 PAC) 42-3. In other week five action, Bethany also posted a Homecoming victory, as the Bison (2-3, 1-1 PAC) handed Waynesburg (2-2, 2-1 PAC) its first league loss with a 24-17 decision. All of the scoring took place in the opening 30 minutes in Latrobe, where a 53-yard TD pass on the final play of the first half was enough to lift Geneva (3-2) past host Saint Vincent (1-3) 27-23. Finally, Washington & Jefferson (2-2, 2-1 PAC)) bounced back from its loss at TMC a week ago, as the Presidents had little trouble with Westminster (1-3, 0-2 PAC), winning 49-7 under the lights in Washington. HARMOTTO NAMED CAMPBELL SEMIFINALIST (10/1/2010)

Washington & Jefferson senior safety Nathan Harmotto was selected by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) Thursday as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth. Harmotto is one of 121 semifinalists from FBS (47), FCS (28), Division II (12, Division III (27) or NAIA (7).

WEEK 4: TMC EDGES W&J; SVC GETS FIRST PAC WIN; WU 2-0 PAC AFTER GCC WIN; GENEVA WINS THRILLER (9/25/10)
Week four of the 2010 PAC football season is in the books following four games on September 25. The game which has decided the PAC champion each of the past two years took place in Kentucky, as Thomas More overcame a 21-17 halftime deficit with 12 unanswered second half points to defeat Washington & Jefferson by a score of 29-21. Saint Vincent made its first-ever game to count in the PAC standings an historic one, as the Bearcats posted their first win over a PAC opponent since the return of SVC football in 2007 with a 17-3 Homecoming win over Thiel. Waynesburg is now 2-0 in PAC action, as the Jackets posted their second impressive league win in as many weeks by defeating Grove City at home 42-16. Finally, the game of the day took place under the lights at Bethany, where Geneva edged BC in a 37-33 shootout as the GT defense stopped the Bison at the one-yard line as time expired. FOUR GAMES OPEN PAC LEAGUE SCHEDULE (9/18/10)
The race for the 2010 PAC Football Championship is officially underway, as four games opened the conference portion of the schedule on September 18. Defending PAC champion Thomas More (2-0) remained unbeaten following a 36-20 road win at Geneva (1-2). It was an historic win for Grove City (2-1, 1-0 PAC), which posted a 31-16 victory at Westminster (1-2, 0-1 PAC) for the program's first victory in New Wilmington since 1961. Waynesburg (1-1, 1-0 PAC) put a damper on Homecoming festivities at Thiel (0-3, 0-1 PAC) with a 34-6 win over the Tomcats. Finally, Washington & Jefferson (1-1, 1-0 PAC) bounced back from a season-opening loss a week ago by blowing past Bethany (1-2, 0-1 PAC) 59-21 under the lights in Washington. POTTER NAMED PAC SAAC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE (9/15/10)
The PAC announced that football standout Cory Potter of Bethany has been named Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for September 2010.

 

PAC POSTS 3-6 MARK IN WEEK TWO GRID ACTION (9/11/10)
All nine PAC football teams were in action on September 11, as the conference posted a 3-6 mark against non-conference competition, including a 2-6 record in the inaugural PAC/MAC Football Challenge Series. After having a bye during the opening weekend, two-time defending PAC champion Thomas More (1-0) got its season off to a solid start. The Saints overcame an early 6-0 road deficit to roll past Hanover 56-12. Other week two winners in the conference included Grove City and Bethany, who each rebounded from opening week losses with come-from-behind wins. The Wolverines (1-1) edged Lebanon Valley 17-14, while the Bison (0-2) topped King's 31-29. Waynesburg (0-1) opened its season by coming up on the short end of a 38-35 shootout at Wilkes, while Saint Vincent (0-2) also came up just short at FDU-Florham, 28-23. In a battle of preseason Top 25 teams, Washington & Jefferson was shut out 27-0 at Delaware Valley. Other PAC-MAC matchups included Geneva falling at home to Albright 54-27, Westminster suffering a 40-10 setback at Lycoming, and Thiel being blanked 21-0 at Widener. GC'S MUSCHETTE EARNS NCCAA POW HONORS (9/9/10)

Geneva senior RB Gerard Muschette claimed co-NCCAA national player of the week honors after an impressive start last Saturday in Geneva’s 32-27 victory at Frostburg State. With 180 yards on the ground and an additional 48 receiving yards. Muschette earned NCCAA player of the week honors once last year and was also named the NCCAA offensive player of the year and Victory Bowl offensive MVP in 2009. If the first game of 2010 is any indication, Muschette is primed for even bigger and better results.

PAC TEAMS POST 2-4 OPENING WEEK RECORD (9/4/10)
It was a tough day to be at home in PAC Football on Saturday, Sept. 4, as road teams were a perfect 6-0 in games involving conference programs. As a result, PAC teams were a combined 2-4 on the day. Winners included Westminster, which posted a 23-6 win at Hiram; and Geneva, which held off a late rally to win 32-27 under the lights at Frostburg State. Saint Vincent nearly pulled off the upset of the day against preseason Top 25 Bridgewater, before falling late 19-14. Grove City suffered a 28-21 home defeat to Carnegie Mellon, while Thiel was defeated by Marietta 28-7 and Bethany was shut out at home by Allegheny 28-0. 2010 PAC PREVIEW: TMC CHASES "THREE-PEAT" (8/24/10)
Will the Thomas More Saints capture their third consecutive PAC football crown? Will fellow preseason Top 25 power Washington & Jefferson knock the Saints off their throne? Will another PAC program surprise the top two programs from 2009? Will the PAC earn two NCAA Division III playoff berths for the fourth time in the past six years in 2010? GENEVA ASSISTANT WICKLINE PASSES AWAY (8/12/10)
Mike Wickline
, who was entering his second year as football defensive line coach at Geneva, passed away today at the age of 52. Wickline spent 26 years at the high school level throughout Beaver County prior to joining the Geneva staff in 2009. In addition to his coaching duties at Geneva, Wickline worked as an industrial arts teacher at Riverside Middle School and High School. Last year, he transitioned into the position of guidance counselor at the high school. He also worked as a mobile therapist for Western Pennsylvania Psychiatric Care. Wickline is survived by his wife, Gretchen, and their three children.

THOMAS MORE PICKED TO REPEAT IN PAC POLL (8/4/10)
The Thomas More College football team has been selected to repeat as champions in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC, according to the preseason poll released at the 2010 PAC Football Media Day at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe today. The defending PAC champion Saints of head coach Jim Hilvert earned 22 of 30 first-place votes to lead the preseason poll, followed by Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg, Grove City, Westminster, Thiel, Bethany and Saint Vincent. WAYNESBURG MOURNS PASSING OF CZERWIEN (7/7/10)
Waynesburg University graduate assistant in athletics Mike Czerwien passed away on July 6, 2010, as a result of an incident he suffered during part-time employment for a local construction contractor. A Pittsburgh native and product of North Hills High School, Czerwien graduated from Waynesburg in 2008 with a degree in business management. He was currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at the university while coaching the defensive end unit for the Yellow Jacket football program. An accomplished football player who started all four years at Waynesburg, Czerwien was a four-time, first-team all-PAC selection. As a 5’8”, 225-pound defensive end, he garnered All-America accolades in 2007, and as of 2009 was the NCAA (all divisions) leader in career sacks with 53.5.
 

MCKOLOSKY NAMED TOP PAC SAAC SCHOLAR (6/23/10)
The PAC has announced that football standout Nick McKolosky of Westminster College has been named PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for June 2010.
 

TMC, W&J RAKE IN PRESEASON RECOGNITION (6/23/10)
The start of the 2010 PAC football season is over two months away, but the conference is already receiving extensive preseason recognition from multiple national publications. The PAC has two teams - two-time defending PAC champion Thomas More and 2009 NCAA playoff participant Washington & Jefferson - ranked in all three national Division III Top 25 polls: USA Today Sports Weekly (Thomas More is ranked 12th, Washington & Jefferson is 19th), The Sporting News (W&J 13th, TMC 21st) and Lindy's College Football Annual (TMC 12th, W&J 21st). In addition, the TMC-W&J game scheduled for Sept. 25 at Bank of Kentucky Field has been tabbed as one of seven national "Games to Watch" in Division III football by TSN. Preseason All-America laurels have been awarded to Thomas More sophomore DB Zach Autenrieb (Lindy's/TSN) and senior DL Tyler Owens (Lindy's) and W&J senior S Craig Sedunov (Lindy's). PAC PLAYERS ACADEMICALLY HONORED BY NFF (5/6/10)
Three PAC football players were honored by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame in its 2010 NFF Hampshire Honor Society. Thomas More's Brandon Kohrs, Washington & Jefferson's Mitch Erdley and Westminster's Nick McKolosky were all named to the society, which recognizes college football players from all divisions who maintained a 3.2 GPA or better. A total of 620 players from 246 schools qualified for membership in the society's fourth year.
