ITA RECOGNIZES FIVE PROGRAMS, 25 STUDENT-ATHLETES WITH ACADEMIC HONORS (7/23/12)
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has recently announced its 2012 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes, and five PAC programs were tabbed with ITA All-Academic team honors while 25 student-athletes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction. The women's programs at Grove City College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College were honored while the men's programs at Grove City and Waynesburg were also recognized for their academic achievements.

 

BUXTON TABBED AS NEW GCC HEAD COACH (7/6/12)
Grove City College has hired Jeff Buxton as assistant professor of physical education and head men's and women's tennis coach. He replaces Joe Walters, who retired from Grove City College at the end of the 2011-12 academic year after 40 years of service. Buxton comes to Grove City after spending nine years as the general manager of One on One Fitness Consultants in State College, Pa. The native of Wyoming, Pa., earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology/movement science from Penn State in 2003 and completed his master of science at California (Pa.) in 2010.

 

FIVE FROM PAC NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT (5/18/12)
Five PAC student-athletes (three men, two women) have been selected to the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District IV Division III At-Large teams, released today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). On the men's side, Grove City junior tennis standout Caleb Fuller (3.93 GPA, economics) and junior swimmer Eric Fairchild (3.73 GPA, mathematics) were both honored along with W&J sophomore wrestler Josh Etzel (3.62 GPA, chemistry). GCC posted both PAC reps on the women's squad: senior tennis player Megan Bennett (3.98 GPA, finance) and junior swimmer Angela Palumbo (3.71 GPA, mathematics). All five All-District awardees now move to the Academic All-America ballot.

 

2012 SPRING TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS  (5/18/12)

The PAC has announced the 2012 Spring PAC Team Sportsmanship Award winners. The PAC Team Sportsmanship Award program was started in an effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among conference teams. The award is sponsored by the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). This is the fourth year the team sportsmanship awards will be given out in each of the 19 PAC-sponsored varsity sports.

 

WALTERS RETIRES FROM GROVE CITY ATHLETICS (5/15/12)
Joe Walters, associate athletic director and head tennis coach at Grove City, will retire at the end of the 2011-12 academic year after 40 years of service to the College and its athletic department. Walters is finishing up his 40th season as GCC’s head men’s tennis coach and his sixth overall season as head women’s tennis coach. He has served as associate athletic director and compliance coordinator since 1996 and currently holds the rank of professor of physical education. Walters also worked as an assistant football coach from 1972 to 1995 and directed intramurals at Grove City for over 30 years. Walters took over as head men’s tennis coach during the 1972-73 academic year and guided the Wolverines to a 358-137 record in 40 seasons. Grove City has won 22 consecutive PAC titles in men’s tennis. The conference has honored Walters as its Coach of the Year in each of the last seven seasons.

 

GROVE CITY SPLITS NCAA 1ST ROUND MATCHES (5/11/12)
The Grove City College men's & women's tennis teams each opened play in the 2012 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships on May 11. The GCC men had little problem advancing to the second round following a 5-0 blanking of Penn State-Harrisburg at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. With the win, Grove City advances to a second round matchup against Middlebury Saturday (May 12) at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, in Fredericksburg, Va., the Wolverine women saw their season come to an end following a 5-0 opening round defeat to host Mary Washington.

 

GROVE CITY TO BEGIN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (5/8/12)
The Grove City College men's and women's tennis teams will begin postseason play by competing in their respective NCAA Division III Championship Tournaments this week. The NCAA released the pairings for the 43-team men's tournament and the 49-team women's tournament Monday night. The men's team will compete in a five-team regional at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore this weekend. The Wolverines will play Penn State-Harrisburg in the regional quarterfinals Friday. Meanwhile, the Grove City women will compete in a six-team bracket at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Grove City opens the tournament against Mary Washington Thursday in a regional quarterfinal.

 

GROVE CITY CAPTURES 22ND CONSECUTIVE PAC TITLE; RILEY, WALTERS SWEEP PAC YEAR-END AWARDS (4/20/12)

Grove City College captured its 22nd consecutive conference team title at the 2012 PAC Men's Tennis Championship, which took place Friday-Saturday, April 20-21 at the Pennbriar Athletic Clue in Erie, Pa. The Wolverines of veteran head coach Joe Walters (who earned 2012 PAC Coach of the Year honors for the final time before his retirement this summer) captured titles in eight of the nine singles and doubles flights, including freshman Peter Riley earning PAC Player of the year honors after winning the first singles title. GCC finished with 52 of a possible 54 points to finish comfortably ahead of second-place Saint Vincent (34 points), followed by Westminster (20), Thomas More (12), Waynesburg (8), Thiel (5), W&J (4) and Bethany (0). GCC LEADS PAC CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER DAY ONE (4/20/12)

Grove City College advanced to the finals in all nine flights to finish with a maximum-possible 36 points on the first day of competition at the 2012 PAC Men's Tennis Championship, taking place Friday-Saturday, April 20-21 at the Pennbriar Athletic Clue in Erie, Pa. The Wolverines of veteran head coach Joe Walters are poised to capture their 22nd consecutive PAC men's title but must hold off second place Saint Vincent (32 points) on Saturday. Doubles consolation and championship finals begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., followed by the consolation singles and championship singles finals. Admission to Saturday's action is free of charge. PAC SET TO CROWN 2012 MEN'S TENNIS TITLE (4/18/12)
The PAC will sponsor three spring sport championships at neutral sites during the coming week. On Friday-Saturday (April 20-21), the 2012 PAC Men's Tennis Championships will take place at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa., with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. On Monday-Tuesday (April 23-24), the 2012 PAC Men's & Women's Golf Championships will take place at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon, Pa., with tee times beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. There is no admission charge to either event. The team champions in both men's tennis and men's golf will each receive the PAC's automatic bids to the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships. WOLVERINES PICKED TO REPEAT AS CHAMPS (3/16/12)

W&J TABS FAULK TO LEAD PRESIDENT TEAMS (1/31/12)
Washington & Jefferson has named Chris Faulk as the Presidents' head men's and women's tennis coach.  Faulk, who served as an assistant coach for both teams last year, is a 2010 W&J graduate and a four-year letterwinner for the men's tennis team.  As a senior, Faulk became just the third W&J student-athlete since 1989 to win PAC Player of the Year honors by winning the No. 1 singles flight title.  A Washington, Pa., native, he is also a United States Professional Tennis Registry certified instructor in the Peters Township Tennis Association.

 

PAC AWARDS TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP HONORS (5/26/11)
The PAC has announced the 2011 Spring PAC Team Sportsmanship Award winners. The sportsmanship awards are sponsored by the members of the PAC Student-Athlete-Advisory Council (SAAC), in an effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among the conference teams. The SAAC is a committee comprised of student-athletes from each member institution assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience.

 

FLOYD TABBED AS PAC SAAC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE (5/18/11)
Two-sport (soccer/tennis) star David Floyd of Waynesburg University has been named PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May 2011.

 

GCC TOPS ELIZABETHTOWN 5-3 IN NCAA OPENER (5/13/11)

The 2011 PAC champion Grove City College men's tennis team was victorious in opening round play of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship in Lexington, Va. The Wolverines defeated Elizabethtown College 5-3 in a first round match. With the victory, the GCC netters now advance to a second round matchup against Emory University on Saturday (May 14) at 2 p.m.
 

GROVE CITY SET TO OPEN NCAA ACTION (5/10/11)
The PAC champion Grove City men's & women's tennis teams open play in the NCAA Division III Men's & Women's Tennis Championships this week. The Wolverine men face Elizabethtown in a first round match at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., this Friday, while the GCC women face Albion at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., on Thursday.
 

GROVE CITY WINS 21ST CONSECUTIVE PAC TITLE (4/30/11)
The Grove City Wolverines swept all nine singles and doubles flights to earn their 21st consecutive conference crown this weekend at the 2011 PAC Men's Tennis Championships, which took place on Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. GCC, led by 2011 PAC Coach of the Year Joe Walters, lost only one set in the tournament. 2011 PAC Player of the Year laurels went to Wolverine senior Ricky Garrett, who captured the first singles flight. PAC TO HOST 2011 CHAMPIONSHIP IN ERIE (4/27/11)
The Grove City Wolverines will be in pursuit of their 21st consecutive conference crown this weekend when the 2011 PAC Men's Tennis Championships take place on Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. GCC, led by head coach Joe Walters, is the heavy favorite to continue its string of league titles, as the Wolverines are 10-0 for the first time since 1965 and swept all seven PAC foes by identical 9-0 scores during the regular season. Saint Vincent, which is competing in the event for the first time, will join Westminster and Waynesburg among teams set to challenge Grove City's recent dominance in the conference. PAC TEAMS HONORED BY ITA FOR ACADEMICS (8/24/10)
Three PAC tennis programs - Grove City, Waynesburg and Westminster - have been named All-Academic Teams for both men and women by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for posting team grade-point averages of 3.2 or higher during the 2009-10 academic year. In addition, 29 PAC men's & women's tennis players (15 women, 14 men) were tabbed as ITA Scholar-Athletes for recording a GPA of 3.5 or better during the past academic year.

Men's tennis standout Jeff Canning of Waynesburg University has been named PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May 2010.

GROVE CITY EARNS 20TH STRAIGHT PAC TITLE (4/24/10)
Perennial PAC power Grove City College earned its 20th consecutive conference men's tennis team title Saturday at the conclusion of the two-day 2010 PAC Men's Tennis Championship at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. The Wolverines of 2010 PAC Coach of the Year Joe Walters captured seven of the nine flights to finish with 50 team points, comfortably ahead of second place Waynesburg (28). Conference player of the year recognition went to Washington & Jefferson senior Christopher Faulk, who recorded a straight set victory at first singles. GCC ROLLING TOWARD 20TH STRAIGHT PAC TITLE (4/23/10)
Perennial PAC power Grove City College is in command after day one of the two-day 2010 PAC Men's Tennis Championship at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. The Wolverines of head coach Joe Walters did not lose a set en route to advancing to the finals in all nine flights on Friday, finishing the day with 36 points, comfortably ahead of second place Waynesburg (24). Grove City can now clinch its 20th consecutive PAC men's tennis team title Saturday. Saturday play begins at 8:30 a.m. with the consolation and championship doubles finals, followed by consolation singles and championship singles. 2010 PAC CHAMPIONSHIP OPENS FRIDAY (4/22/10)
The Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa., will be the site of the 2010 PAC Men's Tennis Championship this Friday and Saturday (April 23-24) beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. Grove City College is the overwhelming favorite, as the Wolverines have won 19 consecutive conference titles and swept through a 5-0 conference record without losing a match this season. Waynesburg (4-1 vs. PAC) and Westminster (3-2) should provide the top competition for GCC. DUNFORD REPLACES GANNON AS THIEL COACH (4/13/10)
Thiel has announced the hiring of Tim Dunford as the new head coach of the recently revived Tomcat men's & women's tennis teams. He replaced Andrew Gannon, who was hired to lead the programs two months ago but was recently forced to resign due to health concerns. Dunford comes to Thiel after serving as head tennis professional at Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket, Va. since February of 2009.  Concurrently, he also worked as an assistant tennis pro at Burke Racquet & Swim Club in Burke, Va. Prior to his most recent stint as a pro, Dunford spent two years as an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Mount Olive College, where the men's team rose as high as 30th in the 2007-08 national rankings.

GANNON HIRED TO LEAD NEW THIEL PROGRAMS (2/18/10)
Thiel College has hired Andrew Gannon to lead the recently revived Tomcat varsity men's and women's tennis programs. Gannon comes to Thiel from his alma mater, Austin (Tex.) College, where he served as head tennis coach for six years. Thiel recently re-instated both sports, which had been dropped by the school back in 2006.

THIEL ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF MEN'S TENNIS (12/18/09)
Thiel College will add four new athletics programs to its offerings for the 2010-11 school term. Thiel’s new sports will include men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s lacrosse. All four programs will compete at the NCAA Division III level and bring the Tomcats’ total number of athletic teams to 24.

GCC'S DWYER NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Grove City College senior tennis player Jeremy Dwyer earned Men's At-Large College Division Second Team Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ESPN The Magazine on Tuesday, June 9. It is Dwyer's second career Academic All-America citation. In 2008, he earned Third Team Academic All-America. This year, Dwyer won Presidents' Athletic Conference titles at fourth singles and third doubles. He finished his career with 52 singles wins and 39 doubles victories. His career record is 91-20 overall.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE CAPTURES 19TH STRAIGHT TITLE AT 2009 PAC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ERIE, PA
The Grove City College men's tennis program swept all nine flights en route to capturing its 19th consecutive team title at the 2009 PAC Men's Tennis Championships, which took place at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa., on Friday-Saturday, April 17-18. The Wolverines of 2009 PAC Coach of the Year Joe Walters earned a maximum-possible 54 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (27), Waynesburg (23), Westminster (18), Thomas More (11) and Bethany (2). GCC senior John Moyer earned PAC Player of the Year laurels for the second consecutive season after winning the first singles and doubles titles. Final singles and doubles brackets are now online.

PAC TENNIS TEAMS, PLAYERS EARN ITA HONORS
Several PAC tennis teams and student-athletes have been named have earned 2008 All-Academic honors by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA Academic Team Award, given to squads with a cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) or 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale, was given to the Westminster and Grove City men. ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, given to varsity players who posted a 3.5 GPA or higher in the most recent academic year, were given to eight PAC men's tennis student-athletes. Grove City led the men's side with five players (Chris Baker, Peter Davis, Bill Derocha, Jeremy Dwyer, Jon Pombo), joined by the Westminster duo of J.D. Eicher and Scott Lawrence along with Jeff Canning of Waynesburg.

DWYER NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Grove City junior tennis standout Jeremy Dwyer has been tabbed to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team, released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on June 10. Dwyer, who led GCC to the PAC men's tennis title after capturing conference titles and fourth singles and third doubles, possesses a 3.91 cumulative GPA majoring in electrical engineering.
